Currently in Spain there are about 47,000 affected by this disease, the incidence of which has doubled in the last 20 years. Every year 1,800 new cases are diagnosed in Spain, of which 70% correspond to people between 20 and 40 years old. This Tuesday is the National Day of this pathology. As we told you in Unsurpassed Lives, they are a sign of optimism and hope in the face of multiple sclerosis.
However, on the occasion of National Multiple Sclerosis Day , which is celebrated this Tuesday, the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN) warns that “in the last 20 years, the number of patients with multiple sclerosis has doubled. It has gone from Email Marketing List being considered almost a rare disease to becoming one of the most common neurological diseases among the young population,” says Dr. Ester Moral Torres , Coordinator of the Demyelinating Diseases Study Group of this organization. This increase, both in prevalence and incidence, may be influenced by the creation of specialized units and by better knowledge of the disease, which have improved the diagnostic capacity, as well as the progress that has occurred in treatments, which have fact that its effect on life expectancy is small.
“But it is also believed that these figures have been influenced by environmental and lifestyle factors that could both intervene in the onset of the disease and be related to the prognosis. We are talking about aspects such as changes in diet, smoking, vitamin D deficiency, level of exposure to sunlight, etc. and women seem to have a greater susceptibility to them,” explains Moral. For this reason, as cases of multiple sclerosis increase, the proportion of women who suffer from it also seems to increase and, therefore, the probability that a woman will suffer from the disease has gone from 1.4 from the first studies, to the current 3.2, according to the SEN studies.
